Winning Photo:  "Spotted"

This photograph was taken last January in north central CT a few hours after sunrise.  Shortly after I slipped into the woods, I spied a herd of deer darting across a nearby river. Using a tree as my cover, I manually set my exposure in anticipation of shooting into the sun and waited as they began to approach. The unfamiliar sound of the shutter alerted the deer to look up and realize that they’d been spotted.  Camera Settings: Canon 40D 100mm  1/250s  f/8  ISO 400

With the sun setting on Mount Rainier, several red fox pups were playing just outside their den.  The mother ran across my path and started up a wooded hillside with one of the pups in pursuit. As the pup passed me it turned for an instant, allowing for just one shot before disappearing in the woods.  Camera Settings: Canon Digital Rebel 300mm 1/160s  f/5.6  ISO 400.

Eric’s love for photography has grown from a lifelong passion for nature and the outdoors. As a child he spent a lot of his afternoons exploring the woods behind his home in Ellington, CT. As he grew older he enjoyed backpacking, kayaking, snowshoeing and anything else that allowed him to be outdoors. Whether he’s admiring a sunset over the Tetons, watching herons catch fish in the Everglades, or focusing on dewdrop covered rose petals in his yard, he feels that he has been blessed to be able to witness some of nature’s grandest and simplest scenes.
